Businesses and organisations should always have a responsible person such as a facilities or buildings manager to keep an eye on fire safety but it is more crucial than ever on days like today when firemen are out on strike.
The 30,000 members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) in England and Wales have joined more than 750,000 council employees, some 200,000 teachers, 250,000 civil servants and hundreds of Transport for London staff in industrial action over a range of grievances including job losses, working conditions, pay, retirement ages and pensions.
Council workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland represented by the Unison, Unite and GMB unions are angry about a 1% pay offer.
The National Union of Teachers is holding more industrial action in a two-year fight over reforms to their pay, pensions and general working conditions. Members of the NASUWT union have joined in walkouts in the past.
The Transport for London admin staff belonging to the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union are also angry about changes to their working conditions, pensions and pay.
