A fire scare engulfed Glasgow Airport last week after a small blaze was reported in the arrivals hall.

The potentially dangerous fire started in a wall void in the Main Terminal Building last Thursday evening and filled the area with smoke, but was quickly put out.

Several fire crews attended the scene from Renfrew, Paisley and Johnstone Community Fire Stations, and they used breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze while the affected area was cleared of members of the public.

There were no injuries relating to the incident but many passengers were delayed as the fire was dealt with.

As the fire was in a wall space, thermal imaging cameras had to be used by fire safety officers to identify where the fire was.

They then used cutting tools to gain access to a safe area into which they could access hose reel jets to tackle the fire.

Group commander for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, Stuart McLean, was happy with how the groups that attended the scene worked together.

A fire risk assessment must be carried out by all employers, under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005. This must involve all the workplace for the purpose of identifying any risks to the safety of employees and others. Any failure to carry out a fire risk assessment could result in a fine or up to two years in prison.
