Women in labour had to be accommodated elsewhere and some ambulance services were directed away from a Winchester hospital after a gas leak forced two key units to be evacuated.
A leak was reported at around midday on Tuesday, forcing a number of operations at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital to be cancelled.
The hospital’s Florence Portal House, containing the maternity unit, and the Burrell Wing, home to the treatment centre, were both affected.
A spokeswoman for Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust confirmed Transco are working on site to repair the leak.
“The rest of the hospital is currently not affected,” said the spokeswoman. “Outpatient appointments are not affected and people are advised to attend as normal.”
