A fire swept through the Spar shop in Broad Street and quickly spread to the upstairs Gulshan Indian restaurant.
The blaze, which occurred on Tuesday just before midnight, took half a dozen crews two hours to bring under control.
There were no reports of any injured parties and the fire is not thought to have been started deliberately.
The operation was coordinated by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, with teams from Newtown, Welshpool, Montgomery, Llanidloes, Llanfair Caereinion and Aberystwyth drafted to the scene.
