Hundreds of shoppers and workers at Sheffield’s biggest supermarket were evacuated when a nearby building caught fire on Monday evening.
The evacuation thankfully went ahead safely as 30 fire fighters attended the incident, after clouds of black smoke were seen billowing above Handsworth Asda at around 6.45pm.
A portable building situated in the premises of a furniture warehouse in Richmond Park Road, which is behind the supermarket, was identified as the hub of the fire.
Staff and customers were evacuated as a precaution as dense smoke spread to the Asda warehouse next door to the supermarket.
Handsworth Road was closed between Lavarack Street and the Sheffield Parkway with diversions put in place as fire teams from Darnall, Mansfield Road, Elm Lane and Barnsley Central dealt with the blaze.
Firefighters were on the scene until 11.30pm and there is now an investigation underway to determine the cause of the fire, in which no one was injured.
