Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a primary school in Devon,
The fire, described by onlookers at the time as”well alight”, broke out early on Tuesday morning, with the flames said to have been covering a quarter of the building.
About 30 firefighters were called out to Parracombe Primary School near Barnstaple at 6.46am, bringing five engines from nearby areas in an attempt to bring the flames under control.
No-one has been hurt and the cause of the blaze has not been established.
Jayne Peacock, the headteacher, said she was unsure about when the school could reopen, if at all.
“It’s horrendous,” she added. “It’s never the kind of thing you’d ever think you’d have to deal with as a headteacher.
“There has been significant damage to a classroom, staff room and kitchen area. It’s a very sad day.”
