A Caribbean takeaway in south London has suffered serious damage after a blaze broke out in the early hours of the morning last weekend.
The fire was spotted at the Tasty Jerk Chicken outlet in Woodside in Croydon at 12.45am on Saturday 7 July by a member of the public and it has since been confirmed that there were two fires in the ventilation system.
It took fire crews roughly ten minutes to put the fire out and a spokesperson for London Fire Brigade revealed that approximately two-fifths of the building had been damaged as a result.
“When we got to it there was a fire coming from the ventilation shaft,” they said.
“It was heavily smoke logged inside.”
To comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, all commercial properties must have a ‘suitable and sufficient’ fire risk assessment and punishments for failing to can include an unlimited fine or a maximum two-year prison sentence.
An investigation is currently underway in order to determine the specific cause of the blaze.
