Local police are investigating after an early morning blaze devastated a nursery school in Surrey last weekend.
Six fire crews were called to Toad Hall Nursery off Wishbone Way in Woking at about 4am on Sunday. The building was in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene. They tried to limit the inferno with the use of an aerial ladder.
The roof of the nursery was destroyed and the first floor had collapsed, according to crew member Jason Remnant. Another part of the building, Goldsworth Park Community Centre, escaped major damage, though it was affected by smoke and water.
The fire is being treated as suspicious, as Surrey Police attempt to establish the exact cause of the blaze. Witnesses have been encouraged to come forward and assist with officers’ inquiries.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, schools and nurseries must perform a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment of their premises. Failure to comply could lead to the Responsible Person being hit with an unlimited fine or up to two years in prison.
