A UK gas company will become the first to take advantage of the Government’s renewable heat incentive through its plan to build an anaerobic digestion plant to produce energy.
The British Gas project, which will turn commercial food waste into biomethane, is the first such plant to receive cash from the Government.
The incentive rewards buildings that have renewable heating systems, offering a long-term subsidy to the firm.
Biomethane, which can be supplied through the existing gas network, will be created from the food waste of local hotels, restaurants and other premises using anaerobic digestion technology supplied by the Bio Group.
British Gas can then pipe the renewable energy to households via central heating boilers.
A study by British Gas and National Grid, an electricity provider, says that biomethane will supply one in every six homes (15%) by 2020.
