Smoke billowing from a blaze at a market in Camden could be seen by Londoners living miles around it, according to a fire service spokesman.
Six London Fire Brigade crews attended Stables Market in the north of the city at 8pm on Monday night.
A team of 30 firefighters was needed to tackle the fire and some 600 local residents were told to leave their homes and shoppers in a local supermarket were evacuated before the effort to put it out began. They had it under control within two hours.
It isn’t thought that anyone was injured in the fire and its cause has not yet been determined.
Stables Market has many stalls selling food from around the world, clothing and decorative materials and welcomes around 40 million shoppers every year, according to its website.
