Trials at two London hospitals have proved the effectiveness of a new scheme designed to help facilities managers and owners of buildings make them more sustainable.
The BREEAM In-Use assessment helps cut running costs and makes buildings greener. Changes have been made to make it more suitable for healthcare premises in examining and improving their environmental performance.
Buildings at St Bart’s Hospitals, including an outpatients, a pathology, and a pharmacy facility in Whitechapel tested the scheme and scored under 50% while a score of 63%, rated Very Good, was achieved at a new city centre build.
James Fisher is the BREEAM team leader for existing buildings. He said the scheme helps cut hospital running costs and improves buildings to make them more healthy and comfortable for patients.
Mr Fisher says both St Bart’s and Great Ormond Street Hospital have seen the benefits the BREEAM In-Use assessment can bring to the people they treat.
