Firefighters attended a Northern Ireland university after a blaze broke out in one of its laboratories.
Four fire appliances and a hazardous material vehicle were called to the David Kier building at Belfast’s Queen’s University after the fire started. The laboratory was shut for around two hours following the incident. Minimal damage was caused by the fire after the blaze was brought under control within 15 minutes, a Queen’s University spokesman confirmed.
The laboratory has now reopened its doors.
Meanwhile, fire crews also responded to another fire at a former care home in Pound Lane, Downpatrick.Four fire appliances and one aerial appliance from County Down attended the scene at St John’s House as residents nearby were advised to stay indoors with their windows shut.
Following the incident three boys were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life in relation to the blaze.
A suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment must be conducted on all commercial properties in Northern Ireland under the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010.
