Failing to co-operate with the fire services has cost the owners of a building £6,000.
Business fire safety officers from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service had identified a number of potential fire safety breaches at the Lilo Grillhouse Restaurant and Takeaway, Cardiff Road, Newport.
When the service asked the owners for information to help the investigation, they refused.
Sabrina Khan of Oakfield Road, Newport and Sabz Ali Khan of Lower Cathedral Road, Cardiff were found guilty under Article 27 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 at Caerphilly Magistrates Court on July 18 after denying the charges at a previous hearing.
They were fined £500 each and ordered to pay a further £5,000 in costs.
Gary Johnson, head of business fire safety for SWFRS, said the prosecution sent a clear message to members of the business community that owners need to respond to formal requests for information from their local Fire and Rescue Service.
