Views sought on first aid changes

The Health and Safety Executive has launched a six-week consultation on proposed changes to first aid guidance in the workplace.

The Health and Safety Executive has launched a six-week consultation on proposed changes to first aid guidance in the workplace.

The body wants to hear the views of business managers and workers on new draft guidance material designed to help companies choose an appropriate first aid training provider.

The current Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) text on first aid could also be removed and incorporated into the new guidance to simplify the information available to employers.

The changes are part of efforts to make it clearer to businesses about what they must do to comply with health and safety law, while still maintaining standards.

Andy McGrory, the HSE’s first aid consultation manager, said: “The changes will be relevant to all businesses. Their views – and those of workers – are important to us so we are particularly keen to hear their opinions.”

The HSE consulted late last year on proposals to amend the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, to remove the requirement for HSE approval of first aid training and qualifications in light of recommendations made by Professor Ragnar Lofstedt in his independent review of health and safety legislation.
